Well, just like being pregnant seems to take a long time and then at the end things quickly progress, thats exactly how this adoption process has been. Although we really haven't waited that long. I know some couples who wait years and years to adopt. We fortunately have waited 13 months. On June 28th, I received an email from our agency that our TA (Travel Approval) was issued in the CCCWA system. However, we were advised that our actual TA would not come for maybe a week. On Monday, June 30th we received the phone call! The "it's go time" phone call in pregnancy, the "you have travel approval" is the equivalent in adoption. After receiving TA we had to submit 5 potential dates to the consulate for our appointment, there's no guarantee any of those dates. They review the dates with their schedule and then they respond. We were hoping we would hear on Tuesday. We didn't. We heard on Wednesday, which was still very exciting! Our CA (Consulate Appointment) is scheduled for July 23, which means we will pick up his visa on the 24, and fly home and be home on the 25th! Once we had those dates in tact we started looking at airlines and making an itinerary. In the end, we fly on July 11 and we will be home the 25th! We will meet Jaren on Monday the 14th. My goal is to blog in the evening and try to keep people updated. We have a long list of prayer requests, so I'm going to bullet them. We are so thankful for all of the prayers.

For our kids at home: Jason, Josie, and Jolie. I have never been away from them for more than a sleepover. Pray for their hearts to have peace and for them to enjoy all the fun we have planned for them while we're away.

Protection: Please pray for a hedge of protection around our kids, our home, our family. Pray for safety on our long flight and all the traveling while in China.

Process: Pray that each step of the adoption finalization would go smoothly, the medical exam, the visa pick up, the consulate interview etc.

Jaren: Pray for his heart to be ready to be loved and to be a part of a family. Pray for that LONG flight home, changing planes, his ears on the flight, our communication and bonding with him!

Health: Keep our children and us from illnesses! Give us the strength we need.

Patience: Traveling is exhausting and being in a foreign country adds a new level of anxiety and stress. I hope we look back on the time with fond memories and that our kids would have extra patience with all the changes in their schedule.

Family & friends: THANK YOU to our families and friends for stepping up in a big way and filling in when we cannot be with our kids. We are so blessed to have such a support system. I pray for extra energy, strength, and grace for each of you who are helping with our kids.

In every way it's hard. Today, I'm talking about why adoption is financially hard. A lot of people hear that adoption, especially international, is expensive. However, most people don't know what goes into the adoption process that has made it a lucrative expense and has discouraged many from adopting. Here is a rough, unprofessional, first time adopting , here's what I've learned break down of international adoption, specifically from China. I can tell you that a lot of the cost depends on the country from which you adopt.

Truly, these are just the big picture items. This list is not an exhaustive or complete list. I'm forgetting the passport fees, gifts to take to the orphanage, the shipping fees for all the documents, medical exams, all the documents being notarized & overnighted, and a list of things I haven't even experienced for in country expenses! I have never met a family who has said "we have plenty of money so we are going to adopt." Almost every single story is a story of a family who is stepping out in faith and responding to a call put on their hearts. Every family is relying on God to work through His people to be part of His plan. And I have learned that when I am proud and think I can do everything on my own, I'm stealing God's glory and what He's doing at work in His people. I read a Corrie Ten Boom quote, "Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God." God is faithful. God is good. My God reigns.
Last Thursday, my friend Britny texted me and said I want to do something for your adoption. Can I bake a cake and auction it? Let me give full disclosure, Britny is a gifted baker. I of course told her yes! One of the hardest parts of adoption is the financial burden. I loathe fundraising. I feel terrible asking people for things. However, if I can make something, sew something, sell something that you want and/or need then that's a different story. Britny graciously made a decadent dark chocolate salted caramel cake. It goes to auction on FB. Then, she tells me theres an anonymous donor who just bid $300! I have never met this person. They live over two hours away. When I messaged this lady she tells she felt like the Lord was leading and prompting her to do something that day and what a blessing it was for her to give! Unbelievable. Honestly.

Fast forward a week...I get another text from my friend Rachel. She tells me, "I would love to do something to help fundraise for your adoption." I humbly replied thank you. Then, not only would she like to do something but she has already thought of the thing. Rachel decided to launch a t-shirt campaign to support of our adoption. She asked me for a word, theme, or verse for our adoption. I told her I liked maps/world maps etc and that I would want it to focus on all adoptions, not exclusive to China adoptions, international, but also domestic, local, stateside etc. Rachel threw out the word "chosen" and I loved it. We talked about a variety of verses that would encapsulate our heart for adoption. Then, on Saturday night I told her I wanted to change our verse. I said I was gravitating toward Ephesians 1:4-5. She suggested we sleep on it, pray about it, and wait to see what the teaching is at church the next day.

Sunday, June 15th was Father's Day! We went to Ekklesia, our church, and Phil Comer was teaching. He said he titled this message "Father like the Father." One of the first points to come out of his mouth was that we need to welcome our children, just like the Father chose us and adopted us into His family. I couldn't believe it. Phil repeated the theme that we are all CHOSEN by God. That in love He chose us. He adopted us into His family. I knew that would not only be our t shirt fundraiser design but really a reminder for us in this adoption process.

We are chosen. We have set a lofty goal of 75 shirts in 10 days! Will you pray about supporting us through a tank/tee purchase? Will you pray for us as we are in the final stretch of our journey?
It's been 2 years since my last blog post and when you wait 2 years to post something it better be big news! Not that it's any surprise to most, Jeremiah and I are on a journey. We are in the final stages of our international adoption process! I hope to write out our story in detail....but for those of you who are reading this as a sneak peak to meet our littlest one, I can tell you this update. We hope to have article 5 pick up this Thursday, June 19th. From here we wait for TA (Travel Approval). We have been told this can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks. We are praying for 1-2 weeks! Would you join us in praying for God's perfect timing? Until we have more travel information, here is Jaren. He just turned 2 on June 2. He's precious. We love him. We have loved him since there was just a hope of him.

Kellihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11726999591221393741noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3219276403776611726.post-57649643176873161212014-05-23T16:34:00.000-07:002014-06-14T16:52:24.899-07:00The Start of a Long Journey Every year I choose a word of the year. A word I want to focus on. A word I want to grow in. In 2013 I chose the word joy. I wanted to know, really know, true joy. I know that happiness is based on circumstances, things that can come and go, change with any given moment. But joy is something people have. Something people are. I wanted joy The first thing I learned in 2013 about joy is that joy often comes with deep sorrow. In February 2013, we tragically lost Grandpa Jack to a sudden, fatal heart attack. That was deep sorrow. Grieving. Sadness. Heart ache.

Let me back up a little bit. When Jeremiah and I first started talking about starting a family we knew we wanted three kids. Until one day I asked what he thought about four. He replied "I kinda figured we would have four." We never felt settled about having another baby and time went on. Jolie turned three and we found ourselves still talking and debating about that fourth child. And looking back, I see God's timing in it all! In the Spring of 2013 I just happened to read Kisses from Katie. Then, a dear friend of mine recommended this documentary on Netflix about international adoption. I'm addicted to documentaries so I watched it that night. Then, I was driving to Grandma Jo's one night and I heard a pastor on the radio say this one line "Do for one what you wish you could do for everyone." I knew that it was for us. I knew deep in my heart we were supposed to adopt.

That's where our journey started. We officially sent in our application to Agape Adoptions in June 2013. And on December 19th we "met" Jaren. The beautiful part of all of this is his given name at the orphanage is Jack. When we read his file and saw Jack written on the top we knew he was meant for our family. It took us until June 2014 to rename him. And keeping in step with our other three children, Jeremiah picked out his name. And I love it too. Jaren means "to cry out to the Lord, to sing out of rejoicing." That is something only The Lord can orchestrate.

As we hope to be in Kunming, China in less than 6 weeks, I will be updating the blog with pictures, details, prayer requests, and of course our trip in China! Thanks for being part of our journey.
I remember other moms telling me they had a six year old and I thought those kids are so old. I remember watching Jamon "play" on the floor with some baby toys and longing for the days when he would play with friends, ride his bike, play catch etc. Well, I blinked my eyes and now I have a six year old. I look at Jamon and often forget that he is only six years old. He is so responsible, kind-hearted and intelligent. What a blessing. When I was pregnant with him I vividly recall praying and pleading with Lord to give my son a tender spirit before the Lord. Jamon is an answer to my prayers.

For his birthday he wanted a fishing party so his other friends could learn how to cast. This past Spring and early Summer Jamon has been able to go on quite a few fishing trips. He's gone to Lava Lake, Diamond Lake and up the McKenzie River. It's funny how in the years past I always spent so much time and energy planning birthday parties, themes, games and favors etc. This year I literally did a simple invitation and food. And the kids played. It was the easiest and most fun birthday party. Who knew a mean game of Sharks & Minnows would be the highlight of a party.
Josie and Jolie love it. Because of Josie's love for this book and all things fancy, for her 4th birthday she wanted a tea party. I loved it. It was the kind of thing I daydreamed about when I first learned I was having a little girl! I loved that Josie was so excited about the tea party. But, who am I kidding. That girl is excited about everything!

I scoured Goodwill, St. Vinnie's, and Value Village for mix-matched tea cups and saucers. I borrowed Angie's nice tea server set and my mom's fine china for the mom's to use. All the little girls were asked to bring a special friend with them to the tea party. There were a number of special dolls and teddy bears who joined us for tea. Each girl had her own place setting and I made pink cloth napkins from some free fabric I was given years ago. I should add that Josie insisted on a pink and blue tea party. She has loved pink and blue since she was two years old! It's funny how some things stick with them.

I think I had just as much fun planning and hosting the tea party as Josie. When the girls first arrived with their moms we had each one decorate a hat with some fake flowers. That was a huge hit! The girls loved it. We then moved into the dining room for our tea. We tried to do the savory and then the sweet. My sister-in-law Anna helped me prep the food, which was delicious! I'll do another post on Josie being four years old, but today I just wanted to record what we did for her big day.
The first week of May has been one of those weeks. Josie was wearing a sundress everyday. Jamon got a tanned neck, even though he wears high SPF sunscreen everyday. And Jolie chose pink shorts each morning. We spend as much time soaking up Vitamin D as possible. When the kids asked to go the park we gladly walked through our pasture, since our goats are gone now, it makes for a nice little short cut. We spent a good hour running around, swinging, climbing and jumping...jumping into the sand! Who knew how much fun jumping off a wall could be?

Josie and Jolie LOVE to swing. I love that Josie can pump her own little legs and she and Jolie both ask for underdoggies. Jamon likes to swing for a little bit but he prefers to climb on the ropes and play basketball. Then the kids found the sand pit. We normally say no to the sand at parks....but today was an exception and I am so glad I said sure. Well, I think Jeremiah actually said yes after he walked through making sure there was nothing dangerous in the sand. Anyway, the kids repeatedly climbed up the wall, jumped into the sand, crawled their way out and did it all over again. It was so much fun watching them enjoy the outdoors. I love that each one of my kids love playing outside. Sometimes I think I am too busy to be outside with them. Moments like this remind me I should be busy playing with them! I am thankful we walked as a family and spent the time to just play. It makes me so excited for Summer....which hopefully is not far away.
Jamon loved soccer so much in the fall that he could hardly wait to play with his buddies again in the Spring. We have been so fortunate this soccer season with wonderful weather. I think every game has been dry and sunny! Jamon really enjoys this team. And he speaks and thinks very highly of Coach Troy and Coach Randy. They are the Ridgeview Kangaroos and there are some new friends on the team and some returners. Of course, his good buddy Easton Roberson is on the team, and this year they decided they would be "twins" at each practice. It's hilarious. They learned if they dressed the same at practice they would be on the same team during scrimmage. Pretty smart. Jamon wasn't the only one looking forward to soccer starting again. Josie loves soccer because she gets to see her friends too! One practice Emily Roper made the girls daisy chains and ever since then Josie has been busy picking daisies and attempting to make her own necklaces.
One weekend Paige and Jace were spending the weekend with Grandpa and Grandma and they got to come to the game. It was so fun! Josie, Jolie, Paige and Zoe played all morning. Jolie learned how to do cartwheels during soccer season too. It's hilarious. She actually gets the main idea. That girl needs to be in gymnastics! And Jace went from one grandma to the next. Jamon played a double header. The sun was out. It was a great morning. One thing I noticed in Jamon is that his foot work has improved so much this season. He is learning to angle the ball more and use his left foot. He and his teammates are even trying to pass the ball to one another. What an improvement from the fall. The herd or pack of players is slowly breaking up and it is actually becoming more of a game. It is so much fun to watch them enjoy playing a sport or an activity. The best part for Jamon is that he keeps score, plays defense and gets the treats at the end!Kellihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11726999591221393741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3219276403776611726.post-20279987791668797212012-04-26T13:50:00.000-07:002012-05-05T20:13:00.671-07:00Bring your child to work dayThursday was National Bring Your Child to Work Day, and I was so excited that Jeremiah was okay bringing Jamon for an hour or so in the morning. I have fond memories of going with my mom when I was little. Jamon said he got to talk to a lot of people and Mr. Michel gave him candy! Jamon is so easy going and doesn't take much for him to be entertained. I think he enjoys doing things by himself.

After a couple of hours the girls and I came and picked up Jamon. The girls had so much fun at daddy's desk. I am not sure how next year will go because I know Josie will want to go.

It seems like with each subsequent child time goes faster and faster. I know that from the newborn stage to the first birthday is the most physical change. However, from one year to two years is a different kind of change. It is so fun to see them with more hair, their personality develop, and see how they fit into the family. Enter Jolie as a 2 year old. Although she is very much her own personality, it is unbelievable how much she and Josie resemble each other. Sometimes I like to try and trick Jeremiah by showing him a picture of one of the girls and he has to guess which one it is. Half the time he is correct.

Because Jolie's birthday is so close to the first day of Spring and near Easter, we did a combined Easter/Spring birthday party. Fun, bright colors mixed with Easter decorations. We had mostly family with a few friends over. Jolie thought the best part of the party was Grandma Angie's lap. One of the best gifts Jolie gave to me was that six weeks before she turned 2 she decided to potty train herself. Literally. I have heard a few stories in magazines and online of kids who decide the want to potty train themselves at an early age. Both Jamon and Josie were easy potty trainers so I actually don't mind the training. However, this was a dream. She literally woke up, took off her diaper and put it in the garbage and climbed onto the potty. Within days she was dry at nap time! And within the week she was dry at night. I shouldn't be that surprised because Jolie is very independent. She doesn't realize that she is younger than Jamon and Josie and just wants to keep up with everything they are doing. Ever since the fall, if not sooner, she has been dressing herself, brushing her own teeth, drinking from a regular cup, feeding herself cereal with milk, and buckling her own straps in the carseat! I keep reminding myself that this great independence and determination is a good thing, because often it results in tears and frustration, from both of us.

One thing I notice about Jolie is that she has very good balance, coordination, and strength, and little fear. This is a dangerous combination. She started doing somersaults in the winter with no one showing her how. She climbs on everything. She is the kind of kid that parents put into gymnastics at an early age because of their energy! She is also the kind of kid that melts your heart. We often wake up to the sound of her singing "Jesus loves me." And when she is not jumping or climbing on or off of something, she is singing "Hosanna" or "Hope for Every Man." I absolutely love that she loves to sing. Also, I love that she is the healthiest eater of our family. Although she did inherit a sweet tooth from her daddy, other than that, she loves and will always choose sliced avocados, tomatoes, salad, hard boiled eggs, black beans, oatmeal, brown rice, fruit, peas, carrots and broccoli! Jamon is our pickiest eater. Josie is a pretty good eater and Jolie wins the best, healthy eater award.

My intention for this blog was to try and journal about our family. To try and write down, capture and remember all the moments that I think I will remember when our kids are grown but I know I won't. Sometimes, like right now, I get motivated to blog a lot. And then other times it's months before I update anything. It's times like this when I get to sit down and reflect on Jolie being 2 that I realize I have to find a way to be more consistent because time is passing by and they are growing up before my eyes. That being said, Jolie you are a joy to have in our family. My prayer for you this year is that you would learn to find joy in obedience. It is so hard to be 2. I know you get told "no" or "stop" a lot. I just pray that you will find there is actually more freedom and true joy when we obey. A lesson that I know comes from the Lord.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">
Jeremiah has fished on Opening Day for about 25 years now. And, this year there were 4 generations of Heacocks. Grandpa Jack, Jeff, Jeremiah and Jamon were all there for the Opening Day at South Twin Lake. Jamon was very excited to go this year. Last year when he was only 4 (almost 5) he couldn't go because there was still a lot of snow and Jeremiah was unsure whether or not he would last in a boat. But in a year things have changed. Jamon has grown to be quite the little fisherman. He has gone with Jeremiah and Jeff to Lava Lake and the Mckenzie River. Jamon can tell you the exact number of fish they have caught each time. He really enjoys reeling in the fish. I asked him what the best part of fishing is, he replied "the snacks." That's my kind of fishing!

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">
The sweetest part of the fishing trip is the one thing I don't have a picture of. Jamon's Great Grandpa Jack took him out to breakfast on Saturday morning to the lodge, just the two of them. The best part of it was that Great Grandpa Jack forgot his reading glasses and asked Jamon to read him the menu. Jamon ended up reading the entire menu word for word. I would have loved to be an on looker to their breakfast conversation. Jamon talked about it for days so it was a special day for him. He said he ordered pancakes with strawberry topping and chocolate milk. Grandpa Jack said he talked the entire time and the waitress got a big kick out of them.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">
This year we were lucky to have Aunt Anna and the kids come up to Springfield while the men went fishing. Anna and I decided that we should make this our annual girl's weekend. We decided to spend the day at Johnson Brother's Nursery and then went out to lunch. It was a great day too, however, I am looking forward to when Josie and Jolie are a little bit older to do a weekend full of sewing, crafting, tea, baking and antique shopping!

We have had a very rainy winter. Really kind of a wild weather winter in general. There was talk of snow during February, and then we ended up getting almost 6" of snow in March! And we were so blessed to have some record-breaking beautiful sunshine the past couple of days. It was so nice that the kids asked if we could have a fire. In our house having a fire means having s'mores. Unable to resist the temptation, we had to have s'mores. Jamon is a very patient s'more making. He will wait until his marshmallow is golden brown. Josie on the other hand is less patient and Jolie just wants to eat the chocolate. It's days like these that I thoroughly enjoy our house. The kids have spent all day running around. Literally, all day playing. And the best way to end a sunny day is with a s'more....or two.

We really did spend all day outside. We took an old blanket that my mom had made me in high school and grabbed a supply of crayons, markers and coloring books. It was a great day. We even had time for toe nail polish, swinging, practicing soccer. More swinging, more coloring and more "summer" fun. It's days like this that make me wish summer was here already!
I asked Amy to come over and try and get some pictures of Jolie for her "official" 2 year old photos. Jolie was uncooperative. Josie wanted her pictures taken. It pretty much didn't go as planned. However, we were lucky to get a few good ones. The only way to get Jolie to sit down was to give her a lollipop. It worked wonders. These two girls are the best of friends one minute and then someone is crying the next. I didn't grow up with a sister so I have no clue what to expect. They already fight over clothes, shoes, who gets to held by daddy or grandma. Although I have noticed a friendship forming in the past few months. As both of them have gotten a little older, Josie has become more "motherly" and Jolie is more playful. Josie and Jolie really are alike in a lot of ways. They both LOVE sunglasses, hats, shoes, and pockets. Both of them are performers also. They like to play dress up, run around aside, take care of daddy, pretend cook and both of them are very good helpers around the house. They both like to sweep, dust, set the table and fold laundry. Actually, Josie is a very good folder, especially with towels. I hope this continues! It's fun to look at them in these pictures because this is what they are to us all the time, running around aside, wild hair and wearing pink and blue!

This was the first year I actually felt comfortable letting them trot around and it was so nice! We ended up going a couple of times because Herrick Farm's is so close to us. When we went for our friend Ellice's birthday it was the most perfect weather! I am a huge fan of summer, but its days like these that make me love fall even more.

The kids had a blast. It was also the first year that we implemented the "you have to carry your own pumpkin" rule. We have been going to the pumpkin patch with this group of friends since Jamon was four months old! What a great tradition. Each year, there are more kids on the hay bails and it gets more difficult to take a "nice" family or group picture. Nonetheless, it is still a highlight every year.
It was actually his first tooth he got the day after he turned 6 months old, his bottom right tooth. He was so excited! He actually wrote a letter to the Tooth Fairy and put it by his pillow, and not for the life of me I cannot find it. However, I memorized it. It said: "Dear Tooth Fairy, please leave my tooth. I will take good care of it. Thank you, Jamon." What Tooth Fairy could deny that kind of plea? So inside a basketball tooth pillow was a little baby tooth and $1. Jamon actually still keeps his tooth in the tooth pillow. And a few weeks later he lost his bottom left tooth! And I put it on the kitchen counter so we wouldn't lose it. Guess what? We, or I, lost it. I was wiping down the counters and it flew on the floor. I must have swept it up. I even searched the trash, but it is incredibly difficult to find a baby tooth in a full sack of garbage. I felt terrible. I told him that I would write a note to the Tooth Fairy explaining what happened and that he would still receive a prize. I am loving this age. It is a time of pure joy and innocence. When I imagine childhood, I close my eyes and see Jamon and Josie at their ages right now!
Little did I know that between homeschool, chicken farming, small scale farming, raising children and trying to improve my sewing skills that there would be little time left in my week to sit down and blog. Blogging is kind of like scrapbooking to me. When you are current and up-to-date it is to maintain. However, when you let a couple of months and major milestones like birthdays, vacations, parties sneak past you it is a little daunting to start again.

That being said, most of these posts are a few months outdated. Thankfully this is intended for my own family and close friends so hopefully everyone will be gracious. Summer ended and I have to say that even though I love summer just as much as anyone else, I truly love fall. It may be my favorite season. This year we made the decision to let Jamon play AYSO soccer. He played with his good friend Easton Roberson and Gabby Roper. I have to admit it was humbling to become a "soccer mom." But I loved it. I loved cheering for him and taking him to practice to see the excitement in his eyes. I think his coach Troy Thorsby was a little concerned during the first practice when coach asked the players to take their soccer ball and dribble down to the orange cone and come back. Jamon proceeded to pick up his soccer ball and dribble it like a basketball....We had so much during the season and all the kids improved immensely and actually ended up scoring four goals in one game. He is coachable, hard working and competitive, skills we hope will stick with him through adulthood.

During soccer season, AWANA started at Springfield Faith Center. Josie was so excited because she was three and old enough to become a Cubby Bear. It was very exciting for everyone. Jamon being 5 is now a Sparks, he gets to wear a red vest and instead of earning patches he earns jewels for his pilot's wing. The program is wonderful. The kids love learning their versus and its so sweet to hear them have conversations about their book time, or the games, or even talk about the versus. Jamon helps Josie memorize her versus and he is ever-impressive with his memorization ability. He quizzes me on the new testament books, I often get a few mixed up and Jamon has to help me. I was a little worried about Josie going to AWANA and staying up late once a week. She is always so excited to go and actually crashes at bedtime. She also has no problem with her weekly versus and it is so encouraging to me to see their love for learning God's word.

Whenever you try and give a summary of an entire season of life you are bound to forget things. Until you look at pictures. So what I thought would be a quick summary with just a few pictures is turning into a multiple posts kinda of summary. I try to delete some pictures but then I think about how much I loved that day or seeing the kids do something or a special event. And then I remembered, this blog is for our family to remember!

One thing I have learned this summer is I cannot do it all. I do not know how some of these professional bloggers can take such amazing pictures, still edit them, write tutorials about them, oh and have a family, make amazing meals, bake, organize their homes, and they probably homeschool too! Anyway, like most of my activities, everything is feast and famine. When its the right time for me to garden, I try to garden. When I am getting a sewing bug, I sew like crazy. And right now, I am motivated to catch up on the blog. And hopefully this will be my motivation/incentive to not get so far behind and actually stay semi-current.

So as I went through the hundreds of pictures on our computer, I remembered more great things about summer. The kids went to the All Comers Track Meet that is put on for free by the Oregon Track Club. It's a great way to introduce kids to Track and Field, to be outside, to be with other families and to have fun competing. They really enjoyed it. Also, we spent a lot of time with family. We had cousins from California, Wisconsin, Iowa, all over. The kids love playing with them and Grandma Jo out did herself entertaining everyone for 4th of July. Fourth of July is a neat weekend where we all get together at the La Pine house, play games, eat yummy food, fish, swim, decorate the house, and just hang out. It's a great time! This year the highlights from that weekend were the slip 'n slide and the sno cone maker that Grandma Angie brought. Huge hit amongst kids and adults!

One major highlight for Jamon this summer was going to Safety Town. Safety Town is a week long day camp put on by the Kiwanis club of Springfield to teach five and six year olds a variety of safety skills. They covered everything from playground safety, fire safety, crosswalk safety, stranger danger etc. Jamon being very rules oriented loved it. He sang different songs, told me new rules and he really enjoyed teaching Josie the new safety rules. I love how responsible he is. It was his first time being dropped off somewhere other than at Grandma's house and he loved it. He reminded me multiple times not to worry.

And like I mentioned earlier, summer was a lot of playing. Playing outside. Playing at the playground. Playing at the football field watching daddy's practice. I love that my kids can literally spend hours outside running around, feeding the goats leaves, climbing trees, swinging, or making up their own adventures. It was a great summer.
She even stayed to come to doughnuts. I love how these pictures capture how different each child is and their personalities. I am so thankful for supportive and involved family who are truly invested in the lives of my children.
One of the traditions I love most is doughnut day. The ironic thing is I don't even eat doughnuts! The tradition started with Jeremiah's Grandpa Jack taking a coffee break from the glass shop. They would rotate between Master's Doughnuts & Rose's Diner. When they sold the glass shop a few years ago I actually thought what would happen to doughnut day? Before we had kids Jeremiah and I would show up to the coffee break time on days off from school or work. Jeremiah has very fond memories of working with his Grandpa and having coffee breaks. It was a tradition I was excited to continue with Papa Jeff. We used to faithfully go on Tuesdays, but with Classical Conversations on that day we have become more sporadic in our visits. I love that our kids refer to old fashion doughnuts as "Papa's doughnuts" and both Josie & Jolie eat their chocolate doughnuts top down. It's fun to sip a diet pepsi and just watch the kids. Well, who am I kidding I am pretty busy preventing a spill, taking someone to the bathroom, opening a milk carton and just being a mom. And it's so appropriate that I am writing about doughnut day because we get to go tomorrow!
For example, I would ask: "Jamon, do you want to try a bite of salmon?" He would then reply, "Maybe when I'm 5." This would happen frequently throughout the year. For some reason, turning five was a big deal in his mind. And the more I thought about it, five was a big deal. Before I had children, I would see other small kids and think that once they were around five years old they stopped being super cute and entered an awkward stage of childhood. Let me explain. Kids who are four can get away with mispronunciations and other "cute" toddler ways. But, when kids turn five it seems like people are constantly asking what skill he's mastering, what sport he's playing, how he's doing in school etc. All the while, I am imagining my not so little four year old who somehow became a kid overnight.

I know everyone says how fast childhood goes and that I should just enjoy every moment. Sometimes it's hard to enjoy the day to day chaos of little kids in the house. But for some reason, when Jamon comes up to me and gives me a "strong" hug or asks me to watch him do something, time does stand still. He was my first baby. He is my only boy. I could make a list of all the things I've done wrong in the first five years, but Jamon is so forgiving, loving, and encouraging. Jamon keeps me honest and accountable. Sometimes I like to go into his room and just re-tuck him in after he's asleep. It amazes me how he went from 21 3/4" long and weighing only 7lbs. 9 oz to 57 lbs and almost 48" in just five years. He went from the same bassinet his dad used to his Papa's old twin-sized bed! He has grown from footed pajamas to thermal tops and bottoms, and the other night he wanted to just wear shorts to bed. I used to read to him for hours and now he reads by himself and to our family.

I am sure each stage has its trials and its joys. I can only hope the next five years are just as good....Kellihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11726999591221393741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3219276403776611726.post-41218774305367878632011-07-16T21:19:00.000-07:002012-05-04T21:28:27.040-07:00Where did summer go?I knew I would have a hard time keeping up with summer activities, I never thought I would completely abandon the blog for almost 2 months! In terms of weather, summer didn't really start until mid to late July and now we are in September and having 80 degree days. I am just now transitioning into fall and realizing I have a lot of catching up to do on the blog, on housework, and on my to-do list. So, this post will simply summarize summer, what we did and what we are doing!

There were a lot of great things that happened this summer. Our chickens are great and we average around 6 or 7 eggs a day! Jamon has really stepped up and taken on the care of the chickens. It's been a neat lesson for him. The garden did okay. I was able to can quite a big of green beans, shred some zucchini for future zucchini bread, enjoyed a few tomatoes, picked a few raspberries, but the highlight was the carrots. The kids ate freshly picked carrots almost daily. It was amazing!

As I reflect on the summer of 2011, I really just think of my kids playing and time spent with family both near and far. We didn't take any major trips, no major projects, just a lot of playing, s'more eating, sandbox digging, and overall childhood fun. Jamon really mastered the pumping of his legs on the swing and even Josie learned how to pump her little legs. I remember standing in the kitchen and hearing Jamon yell: "mom watch me!" I stood there watching him swing with a smile on my face. I enjoyed watching him swing probably more than he did. It's the greatest thing as a parent to watch your children achieve something, even as little as swinging really fast.

This summer I also realized that Jolie is quickly entering the toddler years. She desperately wants to follow Jamon and Josie and hasn't realized that she is substantially smaller and is physically unable to do some of the things they are doing. Both Josie and Jolie possess an incredible amount of perseverance. I am sure it will be useful later in life. Right now, it leads to a lot of tears and frustration. Although toddler years bring a lot of daily challenges, they also bring a lot of sweet moments. I love how she says "wuv you" or squeezes my neck and holds on for hugs. She is such a little sponge absorbing everything she hears and sees and what a little parrot. Every day she is adding more and more words to her vocabulary. It'll be interesting to hear her and Josie in a few years...
I walked into her bedroom and kissed her good morning. I played with her hair and I whispered: "Josie today's your birthday! Happy birthday sweet girl." She happily replied:
"I'm free now!"

I didn't have the heart to correct her. The tradition in our house is to have a birthday breakfast and your choice for dinner. She chose chocolate chip pampakes. With syrup on top. She always wears a headband on her head when she eats pancakes to keep the syrup out of her hair. It's hilarious!

She had a wonderful day and it was beautiful outside, just like the day she was born. I still remember washing dishes at our old house on Thurston Rd. We just ate chicken enchiladas and I was standing at the sink when my water broke. She was only 4 days overdue! We were planning on going for a family walk with Jamon but instead we called grandma & papa and Jamon went and had a sleepover, while we went to the hospital. Flash forward 3 years....I'm standing in the kitchen washing dishes and soaking up the moment of watching this little wild hair girl eat her chocolate chip pampakes. I love this moment. I love this time with her.

Anyway, to celebrate we had a Strawberry Shortcake birthday. However, the only thing Josie knows about Strawberry Shortcake is off of one coloring book that coupled with her love of strawberries and there you go! I made her a light pink tutu, embellished with applqiue a strawberry t-shirt and the birthday girl was ready. Aunt Jennifer made an awesome pinata for her and her friends. I was stuck on a cake idea until my friend Hollan reminded me of cake pops! Cake pops are all over the blog world. I made some strawberry shaped cake pops and we enjoyed real strawberry shortcake, strawberry lemonade, chocolate dipped strawberries and cake pops! We said thank you to our friends and sent them home with a bag full of candy and their own strawberry plant to enjoy! It was a great way to celebrate Josie turning three or "free" as she would say.

We are blessed beyond belief with amazing family and friends. I am thankful my kids have such loving & involved grandparents and great-grandparents and friends that have invested so much time into the lives of our kids. It's a neat thing.
Before I had kids I thought that five-year-olds seemed so old. And now I have a 5 year old. Hard to believe. It's so cliche to say, but I still remember being overdue. Very overdue. I remember being induced at 6 a.m. at McKenzie Willamette Hospital. It was beautiful outside. And at 6:12p.m. Jamon Lee Heacock changed my life forever. I never could have imagined the boy he's become today and it's exciting to see the man he's becoming.

At 5 years old, Jamon loves to practice basketball. He could dribble and shoot for hours. It amazes me at his personal drive to meet a challenge. It's a neat quality to see in a child and I am thrilled when I see him accomplish a goal. For example, he has been practicing for a few weeks at the monkey bars. Finally, one day he spent about 20 minutes trying. That's a long time on monkey bars! Finally he made it all the way across and the look of pride on his face almost brought tears to my eyes. Anyway, other than playing outside, Jamon is a voracious reader. He will read anything: cereal boxes, cards, food labels, books, mail, street signs etc. It's very exciting.

So this morning I woke Jamon up and said: "Good morning. It's your birthday!"
Jamon replied, "It is? I made it!"
I didn't know there was any doubt, but nonetheless he made it to 5. His Aunt Jennifer asked him he grew any and he very seriously said: "I think a little."

Jamon looks up to his dad and Papas more than anything else. They are amazing role models. I think there are few things that are more important to a child than a strong relationship with their father and I am so blessed that Jamon has very involved Papas and a Great-Grandpa (Papa Jack). Jamon loves hunting and camouflage. Thus, we had a hunting party. I made orange felt safety vests and the cake pops were green and brown. Jeremiah and cousin Jim hid ducks in the trees and set up the deer that Uncle Josh made. The kids put on their safety vests and went hunting around our backyard and shot wooden guns with rubber bands. It was so much fun.

Before today's party I was reminiscing about each of Jamon's birthday parties. How much he's changed and matured each year and the way he continues to impress me. He is so intelligent, kind-hearted, determined and the best big brother to Josie and Jolie. He is a natural leader. He is a good friend to others. He is responsible. He loves reading his bible and does not hesitate to tell others about Jesus. Jamon is keeping me accountable, encouraging me to know Jesus better, and is showing me how much fun motherhood can be. All this from a 5 year old. Jamon started going to AWANA at our church Springfield Faith Center this past year in 2010. It is on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:15 pm. When Jamon first started going, he told his Grandma Angie & Grandma Jo that he goes to AWANA's, it sounded like he said "iguana's", so his Aunt Jennifer & Grandma Jo like to tease him about "iguanas." Jamon indigently responds, "it's AAAWANA" with a major emphasis on the A!

Jamon loves it. Josie can't wait to go and Jolie doesn't even know what she's in for. Kids as young as three come play games, learn bible verses, sing songs and learn about the Lord. They have a workbook that gets signed off and the say their verse to a leader. Sometimes when they say their verse they get a badge on their vest! Jamon loved the badges, loved the "homework", loved the games. He would come home and practice the games from AWANA. He started bringing his bible with him every Wednesday for the chance to go up to the front and hold a flag. The program is incredible and I am amazed at how many bible verses he knows in his heart. I cannot help but think of Psalms 119:11 that says: "I have hidden your word in my heart so that I might not sin against you."
